I am looking for a higher torque starter for my 49' M. I presently use a rebuilt 6 volt D-R starter to turn over my NATPA Division 4 puller that has 13:1 compression with a fixed advance of 22 degrees. She's a bear to turn over. I was wondering if a MD starter would work on this old 2-bolt starter mount configuration. I figured this might be an easier solution than making a custom gear reduction starter.
Thanks in advance for any advice you may have.

There is a thread on one of the other boards about using a later starter on the M's by changing the 3 hole nose piece to a 2 hole. My 450 gas has had a 450 diesel starter put on it(don't know why), so I know that the gas and diesel starters are different on the later tractors. I don't know if this will help or not.

Thanks for the response...do you know if there is a physical difference between a gas starter and diesel starter? Can you tell the difference looking at them?
Thanks.

On the 400/450 you can tell the difference by the solenoid. The diesel/LP starter solinoid uses a lever to force the starter gear into the flywheel gear ring. The gas starter has a bendix. Once you know what the difference is, they are easy to tell apart. I'm not familiar with the M diesel starter, so I can't help you there. The guys at Steel Wheel Ranch should be able to give you much more information than I am.

md starter is larger diameter, the noses will not interchange.iused to use a gear reduction starter but it wouldn't hold up,we made up a starter that will easily turn your engine over. if you would like more information email me, randy

Randy,
Yes I would very much appreciate any ideas you may have. I hate to relearn lessons others have already learned. If you don't mind, you can email me at clark.weaver@ps.ge.com so we can discuss more directly. Thank you very much in advance for your assistance.

I have one of these starters on my 400 gas. I had to replace it with a new one. I had no idea that this was for a 400 LP so I just ordered a new one from NAPA. $300 for a rebuilt
